ORAL SEDATION

To help our patients overcome possible nervousness or discomfort, we offer a number of sedation dentistry options, which are designed to relax you and place you in a state of calm prior to undergoing a procedure.

Two of the most popular sedation dentistry methods are nitrous oxide and oral medication. These techniques can effectively calm anxiety and enhance relaxation while keeping you conscious and in control.

Nitrous Oxide

Better known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide can enhance relaxation without compromising your ability to think and respond normally. This method offers a temporary soporific effect that will fade quickly when you discontinue use. Once you are comfortable in the dental chair, we will place a small mask over your nose. You will then be asked to breathe normally as the combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen begin to flow.

Mainly you should feel a sense of calm, but you may also feel a little bit giggly or extra cheerful. After your procedure is completed, we will give you time to let the gas clear from your system. You should then be able to return to normal activity.

Oral Conscious Sedation
We can also prescribe oral medication based on your anxiety level, medical history, complexity of the procedure to be performed, and several other factors. You will feel sleepy after taking the medication; however, you should wake easily and be able to respond to simple requests.

If you receive oral medication, you will need to be driven home by a friend or family member following treatment. Additionally, we ask that you remain at our office for a brief period of observation to ensure the procedure was successful and that there are no concerns.
